The waning life of post-war England is spot on--the loyal servants, some of whom served as bat men in the war, the ambiance of old crumbling manor houses, the dialogue--all make the book a delightful read. Mr. Fogg, Lennox's sweet dog, is joined by Mr. Tubbs, an orphaned cat. Inspector Swift re-appears, much to both men's dismay. Ms. Menuhin has a way of incorporating touches of Downtown Abbey with war details along with humor. Totally not my cup of tea. I thought the main character, Lennox, was a bit of a jerk in the first book...esp. to people he didn't like or were "beneath" him. Same thing in this book...he is just a pompous jerk. . I also didn't care for the way justice was dealt in this book...one set of rules for his rich friends and another for everyone else. Even the Scotland Yard detective was swayed from doing the right thing because he fell in love with one of the rich people. And dont even get me started on the "charming" centuries old custom of the ladies of the family being painted in the nude before their marriage ...seriously something weird about a man wanting to view nude paintings of his mother,his wife, and his daughter all in a row...however"tastefully" done. Really, none of the characters in this series are likeable in the least, they are all just very shallow people. This is the second book in the Major Lennox series and it is just as good as the first. Heathcliff Lennox is invited to the wedding of a childhood friend where he receives Mr. Tubbs (a kitten) as a gift from the bride. During the celebrations leading up to the wedding, a murder occurs and Lennox must find the killer. Beside the wedding of Lennox's friend to an American, there are the side story of the "Beauties" and "The Black Cat Club". The story moves at a good pace and the characters are well written. The dialogue is witty, and I found myself shaking my head while I was reading in a good way! The ending is surprising and clever.Several characters from the first book make a reappearance, but each book is stand alone so if you haven't read it don't worry. If you like your mysteries with a little humor, I recommend that book as well.
